Fire and Ice: Love Reduced to Storage in Sandy Utah

My engagement to my fiancé ended in the middle of a Texas hailstorm. It may have been a cold thing to do, but he turned out to be a fair-weather friend. Now my only connection to him is in boxes in storage in Sandy, Utah.

We were sitting on his parents’ gazebo, showing off our engagement rings, telling stories, making his parents giggle at us, falling more and more in love, when suddenly the wind started to blow and we found ourselves in the middle of one of those famous Texas hailstorms. Hail stones pelted the gazebo with such force that at first all I could think to do was to duck and hide. But I couldn’t see anything! I called my fiancé’s name, but he was already gone. The hail intensified. I began to cry with pain as it riddled my body. I scrambled to my feet, but slipped on the ice chunks that covered the ground. I fell. Hard. Instantly, I knew something was broken. I couldn’t move. I covered my face with my arms and waited for the storm to end. Almost as quickly as the storm had arrived, the sun reappeared, but my fiancé didn’t. He stayed inside.

So, everything fell apart. He took me to the hospital and left me there. I hired a personal injury lawyer and sued his parents. I eventually found my way back to Sandy, UT, where we intended to live. My first order of business was to find self storage; Sandy, Utah has great storage units. Big enough to hold all my ex-fiancé’s junk! Every piece of furniture, every dish, every scrap he’d ever brought into the apartment was taken out of the apartment and put into storage — Sandy, Utah was now where his stuff lived. Even though he lived in Texas, where hailstorms do their worst.
